Please deny POWER4Georgians’ request for a permit extension for their proposed coal-fired Plant Washington. As developer of the proposed Plant Washington, POWER4Georgians had its chance with more than 18 months to start the project. Yet no dirt was turned in fulfillment of permit guidelines. I’m concerned about the expected impacts of POWER4Georgians’ proposed Plant Washington, which has already required years of your attention to hold its developer to federal clean air and clean water safeguards. The project continues to falter due to ongoing economic and environmental challenges that it is unable to overcome. The developer of the proposed coal-fired power plant already had more than 18 months to start the project, and yet no dirt was turned in fulfillment of permit guidelines. Furthermore, since that time, new clean air protections went into effect that POWER4Georgians has not demonstrated Plant Washington can meet. POWER4Georgians had its chance. More affordable and economically sound energy options like solar and energy efficiency are available today to meet Georgia's energy demand—without polluting our communities and draining our precious waterways. Please deny POWER4Georgians’ request for a permit extension. We have spoken at public comment hearings and have sent personal letters. We live less than 10 miles from the proposed plant. We did not expect to spend our retirement "fighting" for our small family farm which provides fresh fruit and vegetables, our native wood lands, our shallow well which provides drinking water, and our air quality. We feel that the proposed plant will harm the things we hold dear. We know the toxins sitting in the ash pile will be here/above ground for years and years to come. Please deny an extension for Plant Washington's permit. We have met many of the EPD staff over the years. We have also seen a turn over in staff. I feel that many of the EPD staff we have met at the public comment hearings do want to protect Georgia's precious natural resources. It seems that following the letter of the law is what is expected of you...whether or not...you believe it is the right thing. We know "money" and back room deals helped put some of these regulations/laws in place. Please, follow your hearts and DENY this permit. This plant is not needed, is not safe, will waste our precious water (from one of the last aquifers in Ga and from the limited water in our small local rivers). There should never have been a permit granted for this unnecessary plant. Please do not grant an extension for the Plant Washington permit. Please do your best to help US - the families who will be so close to this dangerous, unnecessary plant. Help us regain our trust in your department. Please do not let Plant Washington's "money men" influence your decision. It is not good for our neighborhood, not good for Washington County, not good for Georgia, not good for the United States...not good for the world....to add such pollution and toxins to our environment while destroying the land of those so close to the plant. This was not how I hoped to spend my retirement - "fighting" for our small family farm and native woodlands. The proposed plant will be less than 10 miles from our property. Nothing proposed has offered me and my family assurances that this plant will be safe and clean. The issue of wasting our precious water resources is also a major concern to us. We rely on a shallow well for our drinking water. Please DO NOT grant an extension for this project. Please save yourself time and money on this unnecessary proposal and get back to projects you can be proud of. Most of you (the representatives we've met at public comment sessions) are good people who truly love the special natural resources of Georgia. In your hearts, you HAVE to know that this project is just wrong. I also realize you are following the "letter of the laws".....which are also wrong - if such a dangerous, unnecessary plant is allowed to be built. Trust your heart. Let us, the people who will live near the plant, breathe the dirty air, lose our drinking water, have more dust pollution, aren't sure if our fruit and vegetable crops will still be safe and healthy for our families....please let us know that you will PROTECT us....by not granting an extension. We need your help. He deserve your help. Mr. Alford's WANTS are not our NEEDS.
